The Whimsical World of Carl Peters Opens

Celebrating the Life and Craft of Carl Peters

This special exhibition celebrates the life and work of Carl Peters, an immigrant blacksmith who lived and worked at Camulos from about 1920 to 1943. During his time at the rancho, Peters forged iron into useful tools, imaginative decorative works, and handcrafted pieces that served daily life. He left behind a legacy that continues to define the character of the property today.

A Blacksmith with Imagination

More than a craftsman, Carl Peters was an artist in iron. While blacksmithing is often associated with sturdy hinges, hardware, and agricultural tools, Peters brought something more to his forge. His work combined strength with whimsy, turning everyday metal into expressive designs that reflected both skill and personality.

Honoring Craft and History

As a National Historic Landmark, Rancho Camulos Museum remains committed to preserving and sharing the many layers of its past. Exhibits like The Whimsical World of Carl Peters highlight the importance of traditional trades and celebrate the individuals whose craftsmanship continues to shape the rancho’s story.

Curated with a Family Connection

The exhibit has been curated by Barbara De Hart, granddaughter of August and Mary Rubel, whose family played a significant role in the later history of the rancho. Her personal connection adds meaningful depth to the exhibition, linking family memory with the broader story of Camulos.
