If you’re fascinated by California’s past, the Gold Rush, or the artistry behind historical storytelling, you won’t want to miss this event. Author and illustrator Deborah A. Fox will present her talk “Santa Clarita’s Heroes of 1850,” shining a light on the extraordinary people who shaped the region during one of the most dramatic eras in our history.
Her presentation also connects directly to her graphic novel “The Man Who Beat Death Valley: Based on the TRUE STORY of William Lewis Manly.” In this work, Fox brings to life the harrowing journey of William Lewis Manly during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Through both words and illustrations, she recounts how Manly’s courage and perseverance ultimately led to the rescue of families stranded in the harsh landscape of Death Valley—a feat that secured his place as a true California hero.
Beyond telling the story itself, Fox will also share insights into her extensive historical research and creative process. Attendees will gain a behind-the-scenes look at how fact and art merge to create a graphic novel that is both historically accurate and visually compelling.
After the talk, you’ll have the opportunity to meet the author in person during a special book signing and take home your own signed copy of this remarkable graphic novel.
